In collaboration with Southern Cross University and our esteemed client, OzMist, JB Industrial Electrics embarked on a ground-breaking project from 2020 to 2021. The mission? To revolutionize environmental conservation by deploying custom-designed fog cannons aimed at combatting the adverse effects of climate change on marine ecosystems.

Challenge:

The increasing threat of climate change posed a significant risk to marine life, particularly evident in the alarming rise of coral bleaching events in the well-known Great Barrier Reef. Recognising the urgency of the situation, our team of experts at JB Industrial Electrics took up the challenge to help devise a solution that could mitigate these harmful impacts. Utilising our design and manufacturing capabilities in house, our team took the extensive research from SCU and OzMist and brought it to life!

Solution:

Enter the Cloud Brightening Mist Cannons – a cutting-edge innovation meticulously engineered for seawater use. Leveraging the scientific concept of "marine cloud brightening," these fog cannons were crafted to generate miniature clouds that act as a protective shield against the sun's rays. Through a strategic partnership with scientists and rigorous testing, we fine-tuned the design and successfully commissioned a 45m fog cannon.

Implementation:

The fog cannons were deployed for comprehensive sea trials during the peak summer season, precisely when the threat of coral bleaching loomed large. Working hand in hand with Southern Cross University researchers, we conducted extensive tests to evaluate the efficacy of these miniature clouds in reducing sunlight exposure and mitigating environmental stressors.

Results:

Preliminary findings from the research trials yielded promising results. Importantly Our teams Electrical design and manufacture of the equipment was proven to be robust and reliable in these harsh conditions. A Crucial component in obtaining the consistent results the collaboration was after.

The miniature clouds generated by our fog cannons demonstrated the potential to effectively reduce incoming sunlight, offering a glimmer of hope in the fight against climate change-induced coral bleaching.
